The Secondary School Difference

Secondary school is the years of impossible choices, where parenting becomes a real test of character. How do we do it differently at Pal?

These years are a time of immense pressure for teenagers. They're told to make big, life-defining choices about subjects and careers, often before they've had a chance to discover their passions or fully develop. It’s a period of great vulnerability and uncertainty.

This is also when parents often feel a growing distance from their children. As teenagers assert their independence, parents can find it harder to guide them, especially when their children begin to resist advice. This can be particularly challenging as students start defining themselves by their successes and failures. At PAL, we understand these challenges. Our high school program is designed to provide close support to both students and parents.

We help teenagers navigate these complex decisions, encouraging them to see challenges not as roadblocks, but as opportunities for growth. Our goal is to ensure they develop the discipline and confidence to make choices that lead to a fulfilling and meaningful life.

To put it bluntly, when they experience difficulty or a lack of quick success, they have two choices:

Firstly, they can choose to think, “This is hard, and I’m not finding it as easy as others — so I hate this subject/teacher/school.”

Or they can choose to think, “This is hard, and I’m not finding it as easy as others — but I’m still making progress in something worthwhile.”
